Impactful Victories, Member Testimonials & Ongoing Initiatives

Dear Moneylifers,

Greetings! Let me start with an email form Kiran Hegde that came in this morning and gladdened our hearts.

"I am happy to inform you that the Insurance Ombudsman has awarded the ruling in my favor. Rather than saying I won this battle, I am proud to say that we have won this, and this 'we' stands for the unselfish support from the Moneylife Foundation Team. Special mention to Mr. Abhay Datar, whose yeomen service in this battle can't be expressed in words. Early in the case, the insurance company, through my agent, wanted to settle with an extra payment of Rs 12000 which was refused. Instead, now the forum awarded me Rs 20000 as full and final settlement. Thanks to the Moneylife Team, I will be receiving the extra compensation."

Mr Hegde's effort with Mr Datar's support is exactly what Moneylife Foundation hopes to achieve in order to push for fair treatment of consumers and better grievance redress. It requires dogged effort and we hope more of our members help score innumerable small victories to help consumers win the big war.

As the email points out, the choice was to settle the matter out of court, or as Mr Datar recommended, continue the fight at the insurance ombudsman's office. It took seven long months, but led to success and a suitable compensation.

Bank Charges and Transmission Woes: Where are the Women and Gen-X?

I have often said, consumers with savings are not a vote bank, so our issues will only be addressed through persistent efforts, data and detailed studies to present facts and alternatives. We are engaged in two such efforts at the moment and are in the process of gathering data.

As the We are happy with the response to our study on asset transmission, but there isn't enough data on experiences with capital market institutions – mutual funds, depositories, registrar and transfer agents etc. We are especially keen to know if SEBI's recent efforts to streamline processes has worked and if anyone of you have used the death registry in the past month. Please do take the survey and share it with friends to help us gather more information– https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/asset_transmission. If you would like to get a link on Telegram or Whatsapp, please do drop us a message there.

Our study on bank service charges also has over 1000 responses, but guess what, there are hardly any women and gen-Xers making the effort. Do bank charges not worry you? We need to hear your voice. May I request all readers to share the survey with young professionals and women so that we get better feedback. Here is a link to the survey: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/bankchargessurvey.

But please help spread the word through WhatsApp, Telegram, Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn or whatever is your favourite social media application. We would be happy to facilitate it.
