Stay Safe from Cyber Crime;
Fill Our Surveys on Bank Charges & Asset Transmission Woes

Dear Moneylifers,

Cybercrime is rising at an astonishing rate and we are all vulnerable since we have no choice but to negotiate the world of digital transactions, phishing attacks, identity theft, deep fakes and sextortion. We don't even know how to recognise spoofed email addresses that masquerade as banks, regulators, enforcement agencies, government departments or even our favourite shopping sites. What is worse, when trapped by cybercriminals, most of us are clueless about how to deal with it.

This week we tried to bridge the information gap through a very englightening webinar presented by Mr Balkrishna Wagh, a retired assistant police commissioner, with over three decades of experience in law enforcement. He provided many insights into how to deal with cybercrime, but his key takeaway was that we should all be conscious about the important 'golden hour' after a cyber fraud is committed.

The faster you report a crime the more likely is the chance of being able to recover the money, since it is transferred at great speed, by the fraudsters, from one account to another. I would urge you to read our coverage of the webinar and share the video with your friends and near ones to help keep them safe: Fraud Alert: How To File A Cyber Crime Complaint and also watch a video recording here.

As 2023 comes to an end, we realise that dealing with cyber fraud is going to be a big issue for our members and we intend to focus on in more seriously in 2024. We are already doing this through Yogesh Sapkale's weekly column #FraudAlert, which updates you to new tricks by criminals and how to deal with them: https://www.mlfoundation.in/fraud_alert.html

I have another request. Please spare a few minutes to complete the surveys we have put out on our ongoing studies: the first on bank service charges and the second on challenges to claiming financial assets. Your feedback will help improve the studies and allow us to make a better case for policy changes and consumer protection.
