Thank You For Your Generous Support;
More On The Pain Of Asset Transmission

Dear Moneylifers,

Let me begin by thanking a regular supporter of Moneylife Foundation, for once again generously offering to run a donation matching campaign, and for all the very heart-warming response from all you wonderful supporters and members. We are deeply appreciative, because it allows us the independence to say and do things that promoter your financial interests.

If you have benefited in any form through our work, please do consider making a donation. The match campaign will end in the next few weeks, so please do donate and make use of the opportunity to double your impact in this match campaign.

I also urge you to spread the word about our work and encourage many more people to benefit from our financial literacy and advocacy efforts by availing of the free membership to Moneylife Foundation and watch our videos.

Unclaimed Deposits & A Centralised Database

Members of Moneylife Foundation will recall that I had filed a plea (SC Issues Notice on Plea By Sucheta Dalal That Information on Unclaimed Amounts Lying in Dormant Accounts Be Made Publicly Available on a Centralised Platform) in the Supreme Court with the help of senior counsel Prashant Bhushan, regarding unclaimed deposits and had asked that all information regarding such deposits be accessible in a centralised database.

Our concern about the hurdles to smooth transmission of physical and financial assets is further underlined by a survey conducted by Local Circles which showed how corruption adds to peoples' woes. The survey revealed that 52% of Indian families trying to transfer assets of a deceased family member to legitimate heirs/successors had to pay bribes at several places to get things done. And when bribes were paid, perhaps legitimate checks and questions were ignored, leading to another set of horror stories. I have written about it here: How Corruption Adds to the Enormous Friction That Legal Heirs Face in Getting Property Transferred or you can watch it as a video here: https://youtu.be/icBmaLTZKm8

This is a continuation of our effort on reuniting unclaimed assets with their rightful owners. Many of you know we are doing this through the public interest litigation and have also made a detailed representation to the ministries of finance, corporate affairs, Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and Securities & Exchange Board of India (SEBI), with the help of iSprit Foundation. Our representation has examined the feasibility of an online system to transferring assets and how it is done by key developed nations. You can read this detailed note here: https://www.mlfoundation.in/ memorandum/note-on-central-authority-for-unclaimed-funds-sent-to-regulators/176.html.

Consumer Awareness, Financial Literacy & Counselling

Fraud Alert
Another important reading for those of us who are not very tech savvy is the weekly column by Moneylife's Deputy Editor Yogesh Sapkale titled 'Fraud Alert'. He tracks the various ways in which fraudsters - who are usually a couple of jumps ahead of the cops and regulators - find new ways to part us from our hard earned money. Do take a look at these columns, because Yogesh tracks new developments and suggests ways in which you can avoid being duped. You can read all the columns under the this #FraudAlert.

How To Series
Our series of 'how to' articles also provide detailed guidance in a range of issues from filing a complaint to obtaining an heirship or succession certificate. You may want to spend some time to check if any of these is relevant to you today. Here is a link to the series: https://moneylife.in/howto.html
