Dear Moneylifers,

Greetings! Let me start by sharing an issue that has been bothering me and many other activists. Why do we find it so difficult to get people to support public causes, that too on issues that will affect them badly over the years?

On 1st October, a bunch of activists met to discuss some disastrous plans for Mumbai's land usage and arrived at the conclusion that we need to work on involving people by getting our message across in a simple and focused manner, ideally using digital technology.

On Friday, 5th October, we hope to take this through forward by learning from Sunchika Pandey who manages the wonderfully effective @MumbaiPolice social media presence to tell us "How to Use Social Media For Public Good". You may like to register for this session, which is being held with the kind support of ICICI PruLife at their venue at Prabhadevi. Register here

We need to do a lot more. If you have any ideas and skills and want to volunteer your help in the digital space, we are looking for you!

Jeevan Saral: Many of you may recollect our hard-hitting cover story on Life Insurance Corporation's Jeevan Saral plan. We have found that Senior Citizens have lost as much as 65% - 70% of their premiums paid. Younger people have lost less, but have started to surrender these policies to avoid further loss. Yes, insurance is tax-exempt, but when you are a victim of mis-selling, you may want justice. Moneylife Foundation has written to LIC and working on taking this forward as a class action. We believe that LIC has actively participated in the misselling of Jeevan Saral and needs to correct the situation. If you have invested in Jeevan Saral, you can join the effort for fair treatment. Read this report and connect with us at [email protected] with precise details you're your plan at the earliest.

Sridhar Acharayalu's talk on RTI:
Many Punekars missed Prof. Sridhar Acharayalu's (Central Information Commissioner) excellent talk last year. On 13th October, which is commemorated as RTI Day (that was the day the RTI act came into force 13years ago), Dr Acharayalu is in Pune again and has kindly consented to address Moneylife Foundation's special event to be held along with
Pune Shramik Patrakar Sangh. Don't miss the talk "How Right To Information Empowers Democracy & Transparency" and discussion at Patrakar Bhavan, Pune, from 4pm to 6 pm. Register here

RTI Centre

In this month, we also conducted two special RTI sessions in association with former CIC Shailesh Gandhi. Collaborating with Public Concern for Governance Trust (PCGT) we conducted a RTI workshop for Law College students at Advocate Balasaheb Apte College of Law, where Mr Gandhi shared his knowledge and enlightened students on using RTI for good governance. Commandant General of Home Guards and Director of Civil Defence, Sanjay Pandey had asked us to conduct a RTI session for PIOs of Civil Defence and Home Guards and Mr Gandhi obliged in presenting a valuable session for them.

We are open to conducting such RTI sessions for your organization, do write to us at [email protected] with your suggestions or proposals. The sessions will be conducted FREE of cost and at your conference hall/meeting room for a minimum of 75 persons. Alternatively, we can also conduct them at Moneylife Foundation's Knowledge Centre, if you have 20 to 50 people attending.

As always, if you are not a Mumbaikar, you can catch our events on Facebook live or watch them on our YouTube Channel. If you reside in Mumbai, you can also benefit from our Free Daily Clinic guidance sessions to resolve your issues relating to Housing, Cooperative Housing Societies, Lok Adalats, RERA, Right to Information (RTI), banking and consumer complaints and many other issues that affect your daily life.

You will find a list of activities and programmes conducted in September below. Also, feel free to write to us if you have suggestions for other future workshops or want a repeat of any of those conducted earlier–if there is a lot of interest, we will surely arrange another session.
